Marahau is the closest village to the start of the Abel Tasman Track. The walking track starts from the Department of Conservation shelter on Sandy Bay - Marahau Road. The village sits on a very shallow, tidal bay, so it is not possible for larger boats to land here at low tide.
Marahau to Kaiteriteri: It is not recommended to walk the 7.5 kms along the Kaiteriteri - Sandy Bay road, between the start of the Coastal Track at Marahau and our boat depature point in Kaiteriteri . It is a public road, very narrow and winding, with no foot path, and is used by many vehicles, including large coaches.
Cruise and Walk options from Marahau
If you are staying in Marahau, and want to travel on the Vista Cruise, your choices are to drive 15 mins to Kaiteriteri, or walk (1 hour, 30 mins) along the Coastal Track to Apple Tree Bay for your boat pick up or drop off.
To drive to Marahau from Motueka, it is quicker if you do not turn off Hwy 60 at the Kaiteriteri junction. Stay on the highway for approx 200 metres as it veers left, then take the next right-hand turn off the highway, signposted to Abel Tasman National Park via Marahau. Marahau is approximately 10 kms (6 miles) from the turnoff.
