Please note: the river mouth at Onetahuti has changed, creating a tidal crossing in the centre of the beach. This crossing can be negotiated comfortably 4 hours on either side of low tide. Take a scenic cruise into Tonga Island Marine Reserve, pause to view the antics at the resident Seal Colony then land at Awaroa, where panoramic views of the largest inlet on the coast hold relics of Maori and European settlement.
Then, walk over a forested saddle to Onetahuti where a unique board walk and bridge, designed by local Maori iwi leads onto the golden sands of the beach. Continue over the Tonga Saddle and around the Bark Bay inlet with its new swing bridge, along the waterfall trail for a pick up Medlands Beach.

9.20 or 10.30 am: Vista Cruise departs Kaiteriteri to take a scenic cruise to Tonga Island Marine Reserve, pausing to view the antics at the resident Seal Colony.
11.05 am or 12.20 pm: Disembark on the Awaroa sandpit - a long stretch of golden sand with panoramic views of the largest estuary on the coast. Explore this historic area, with relics from Maori and European settlement, then start your 5 km (3 mile) walk over a forested saddle to Onetahuti (gentle grade up to maximum elevation 85 m/280 ft). Here a unique board walk and bridge, designed by local Maori iwi, leads from the forest onto the spectacular golden sands of the Beach.
Walk along the beach and over the headland to explore historic Quarry. You can choose to end your walk here. (See Awaroa Pioneer Trail 2 hour Walk for details) or continue 4.1 kms (2.5 miles) over the Tonga Saddle and around the Bark Bay inlet with its new swing bridge, along the waterfall trail to Medlands Beach.
5.05 pm: Medlands Beach boat pick up to return to Kaiteriteri at 6.00 pm
