Day 1: Nelson / Motueka to Awaroa via Totaranui
All aboard our Vista Cruise to travel the length of the golden Abel Tasman coast from Kaiteriteri north to Totaranui. Relax on upper or lower viewing decks and enjoy a hot drink from the cafe. From Totaranui, walk through mature beech and rata forests, and along secluded golden beaches to the breathtaking expanse of the Awaroa inlet. Welcome to Meadowbank Homestead at Awaroa, a faithful re-creation of the Wilson family's original home on the "finest site in the bay".
There is no high tide track around the Awaroa Inlet
If you will not reach the Inlet within 2 hours of Low Tide, discuss the options for boat transfers with your hosts.
Scenic drive to Kaiteriteri from Nelson (1 hour) or Motueka (20 mins)
Cruise Kaiteriteri to Totaranui – 1.5 hours
Walk Totaranui to Awaroa 2.5 hours (7 kms, 4.5 miles) including tidal crossing

Pick up in Nelson (10.15 - 10.45 am) or Motueka (11.30 am).

11.30 am: Meet at our Motueka office to pick up track notes, discuss tidal conditions, check details of your trip, and leave excess luggage and valuables in safe storage.
12.15 pm: Coach departs for Kaiteriteri. If you have your own car, follow the coach to safe off-street parking.
1.00 pm: Vista Cruise departs Kaiteriteri.
2.40 pm: Arrive Totaranui to walk to the Awaroa Inlet. Either walk, if the tide is out, or take a boat ride across the stunning expanses of the largest inlet on the coast.
5.00 pm (approx.): Welcome to Meadowbank Homestead at Awaroa, right on the edge of the inlet, hosting you with traditional Kiwi charm. Freshen up with a hot shower in your ensuite room while your hosts prepare an innovative menu. You can choose to purchase a local beer or wine from the in-house bar.
Day 2: Awaroa to Torrent Bay
Wake to breakfast overlooking the gardens of Meadowbank Homestead, watching the movement of tides over golden sand. Your walk along the coastal track weaves through shady native forest and comes out onto golden sand beaches, ideal for swimming. You choose how much walking you want. Please arrange boat transfers, if required, before you leave the Lodge.
Walk in 3 Sections, 2 hours walk each section.
- Awaroa to Onetahuti and Tonga Quarry (6 kms, 3.5 miles)

- Tonga Quarry to Bark Bay (Medlands Beach) (4 km, 2.5 miles)
Max elevation 120 m (400 ft)
- Bark Bay to Torrent Bay (7 kms, 4.4 miles)
Max elevation 105 m (340 ft)

9.30 am: Depart Awaroa for the scenic walk to Onetahuti. A fascinating board walk and bridge designed by local Iwi leads you to the long golden sands of Onetahuti.
11.30 am: Depart Onetahuti. Before embarking on the Tonga Saddle, explore the site of historic Tonga Quarry.
Descend to Bark Bay around the Waterfall Trail with waterfall views from a sturdy swing bridge.
1.30 – 2.30 pm: Lunch at Bark Bay. Dept. of Conservation facilities include shelter, picnic tables, filtered drinking water and modern toilets. Relax in the shade or swim and explore.
After lunch, walk the most varied section the coastal track as it winds through shady gullies of mature Beech forest, fern grottos and sunny groves of Manuka framing coastal vistas. Cross the swing bridge at Falls River and continue to Torrent Bay.
4.30 pm (approx.): Walk into Torrent Bay with its village of holiday houses on the beach. Welcome to Torrent Bay Lodge and a hot shower in your ensuite room.
Day 3: Torrent Bay to Kaiteriteri / Motueka / Nelson
Wake up to morning light on the golden sands of Torrent Bay and perhaps a coffee on the deck before breakfast. Then walk the easiest section of the coastal track from Torrent Bay to Marahau, with panaromic views across Tasman Bay to Nelson.
Walk 4-5 hours, depending on tides (13 - 16 kms, 8 - 10 miles).

Scenic drive Kaiteriteri to Motueka (20 mins) or Nelson (1 hour)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
9.00 am: Depart Torrent Bay Lodge. The tides will determine of you walk around the Torrent Bay inlet to views overlooking Anchorage Beach, or take a short-cut across the inlet to walk along Anchorage Beach, then up to the main coastal track.
Around Midday: stop for lunch at a sheltered beach with views over the Astrolabe Roadstead to Adele Island.
2.30 – 3 pm: Walk into Marahau at the end of coastal track. Our driver is waiting to meet you for the return journey to Motueka, via Kaiteriteri to pick up kayakers and overnight luggage from the boat.
4.00 pm: arrive Motueka
5.30 - 6.00 pm: arrive Nelson
Please confirm times with us before you book connecting airline flights.
The direction of this trip may be reversed on some departures with earlier pick up in Nelson (7.15 - 7.40 am) and Motueka (8.15 am) for Vista Cruise departure from Kaiteriteri at 9.20 am.
The earlier pick-up applies to most Wednesday departures and all departures after NZ daylight savings time finishes at the beginning of April.
