Abel Tasman National Park has two main entrances:

  1. Marahu in the south - 63 kms (40 miles) from Nelson
  2. Wainui in the north - 125 kms (76 miles) from Nelson, 25 kms (16 miles) from Takaka in Golden Bay.

The only road within the National Park accesses Totaranui campground from Takaka (32 kms/20 miles). The road is unsealed for the final 6.5 kms (4 miles). A 4-wheel-drive track leads off this road to the Awaroa estuary where access to the main coastal track is possible only at low tide.

To preserve the pristine Abel Tasman Coast, a Foreshore Management Plan restricts commercial boat landings to specific beaches in the park, between Marahau in the south to Totaranui in the north.

The Abel Tasman Coast Track starts at Marahau, in the south. Here, a shallow tidal beach is accessible to smaller water taxis. Our larger, comfortable cruising catamarans transfer passengers at Kaiteriteri where the beach provides safe, all-tide landings.

Staying in Golden Bay?
Your best choice for a day trip with us is our Totaranui Dine & Stride. For a full range of day trips, our boats start and finish in Kaiteriteri 55 kms (35 miles) from Takaka. The road includes a long, narrow, winding section over the Takaka Hill so the drive takes around 1.5 hours.
