Wilsons Abel Tasman National Park

Location: Torrent Bay Lodge & Meadowbank Homestead (Awaroa), Abel Tasman National Park
Roster: 8 days on / 6 days off

Season: Fixed-term from September 2026 – early May 2027

About Wilsons Abel Tasman

Wilsons Abel Tasman is a family-owned business pioneering visitor experiences in Abel Tasman National Park since 1977. With established systems and a strong team culture, we deliver high-quality, down-to-earth hospitality in one of New Zealand’s most stunning and remote environments.

Our overnight guests stay at two remote beachfront lodges within the park boundaries — accessible only by boat, walking track, or kayak.

This is a live-in lodge role — not a restaurant or fine-dining chef position.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced cook who enjoys being part of a small, hands-on team.

You will prepare and serve quality, home-style meals using set seasonal menus provided by our Head Chef. This is not a stand-alone kitchen role — outside of meal service, you’ll work alongside your two lodge teammates to help with housekeeping, guest hosting, deliveries, and general lodge duties.

Each lodge operates with a close-knit team of three:

  • 1 Cook

  • 2 Housekeepers

Everyone supports each other. This role requires someone happy to jump in wherever needed.

If you’re looking for a high-pressure restaurant kitchen — this isn’t it.
If you enjoy cooking, teamwork, and being part of the full guest experience — this could be perfect.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner following set seasonal menus

  • Complete weekly food stocktakes (Head Chef manages ordering)

  • Maintain high food safety, hygiene, and presentation standards

  • Assist with room cleaning and lodge presentation when required

  • Support evening hosting and bar service

  • Help unload food and supply deliveries arriving by boat

  • Manage low-tide pickups using the lodge tractor or quad bike (training provided)

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with Lodge Managers and your team

  • Adapt to changing weather conditions, guest numbers, tide times, and transport schedules

Remote Lodge Living – Important to Know

This is a remote, off-grid position.

  • Access is by boat only

  • You live onsite in shared staff accommodation

  • There are no shops or cafes nearby

  • Power is generator/solar-based

  • WiFi is available

  • Boat transfers are weather and tide dependent

The role is physically active and includes lifting crates, handling laundry, operating the tractor or quad at low tide, walking lodge stairs, and working on your feet for extended periods.

You must be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions.

Who Will Thrive in This Role

  • Solid cooking experience (lodge, café, restaurant, catering)

  • Enjoys cooking without needing a high-pressure restaurant environment

  • A genuine team player

  • Calm and organised during busy periods (December–March peak season)

  • Practical, adaptable, and positive

We are looking for someone who values teamwork and takes pride in contributing to the whole lodge — not just their own role.

Requirements

  • Previous cooking experience

  • Understanding of food safety practices

  • Physically fit

  • Full driver’s licence

  • Current First Aid Certificate

  • NZ work visa valid through May 2027 (if applicable)

  • Bar Manager’s Certificate (can be completed upon employment; reimbursed after full season)

We Offer

  • A unique live-in role in Abel Tasman National Park

  • Accommodation, WiFi and meals while rostered on

  • Structured systems and supportive management

  • A balanced 8 days on / 6 days off roster

  • Time to explore the park on your days off

  • A positive, professional team culture

  • The opportunity to be part of a long-standing New Zealand family business
