FAQs
Is sea kayaking difficult?
Sea kayaking in Abel Tasman is suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness. When sea and weather conditions are calm, kayaking requires little strength or experience.
Your guide provides full instruction before you begin, and stable double kayaks make paddling comfortable and enjoyable.
If conditions change, our boat crew can provide back-up support so you can continue your adventure safely, either walking or on our Vista Cruise.
Whatâs included?
We provide all the equipment you need for a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience.
Our kayaking gear includes:
-
Stable double sea kayaks
-
Spray jackets
-
Buoyancy aids (lifejackets)
-
Dry bags for spare clothing and camera gear
Dry bags are waterproof when sealed correctly. However, we cannot guarantee sensitive electronic equipment against splash damage.
For safety and quality of experience, groups are kept small with a maximum of eight guests per guide.
What should I wear?
Abel Tasman enjoys beautiful weather year-round, but temperatures can be cooler in the mornings and late afternoon with sea breezes.
We recommend bringing:
-
A warm layer such as wool or polar fleece for breaks
-
A spare set of clothing stored in the kayak
-
Lightweight walking shoes in case landing on a beach requires some walking
The spray jacket and buoyancy vest we provide help keep you warm while paddling.
Not recommended: Cotton clothing (especially denim) is heavy and cold when wet and takes a long time to dry. Quick-dry fabrics such as polypropylene, wool or polar fleece are much more comfortable.
Do I need to wear shoes in the kayak?
Footwear in the kayak is optional, but it will likely get wet. Good options include:
-
Rubber water socks
-
Sport sandals
-
Thick socks
You should also bring light walking shoes stored in a dry bag, in case walking is required when landing on beaches.
Is there an age limit?
There is no maximum age limit. If you're keen, weâre happy to take you kayaking!
Minimum ages are determined by kayak safety regulations for guided groups.
-
8 years â sheltered water short trips (Kaiteriteri Highlights)
-
10 years â Split Apple Paddle coastal kayaking
-
12 years â longer day trips and multi-day trips
For privately guided groups the minimum age may be lowered. Final decisions are made by the guide after assessing the childâs ability.
Is there a weight limit?
There are no strict weight restrictions. However, depending on height and weight distribution, kayaking may feel less comfortable for some people.
If you are over 190 cm (6 ft 3 in), and/or over 90 kg (200 lbs), please contact us to discuss the best kayaking options.
